The plastic connector from the wiring harness to the lock showed some evidence of burning but it fitted ok still to the new lock and functioned fine.

Examine your washer s tech sheet to determine which wires to cut. The majority of washing machine lid lock switches are powered by 3 or 4 wires each of which performs a different function. I ordered a new branded door lock and fitted it fine. So one of the connections goes to mains hot and to one side of the heater wire on the bi metallic switch.

Scan the included wiring diagram until you find the wires labelled lid switch and lock switch. The switch is of the bi metallic type and works as it heats up when the door is closed and the water level or start switch is activated and so the parts inside move to lock the door. For example this is a possibility but much more rare if the common wire at the back of the door lock has a break in it somewhere or faulty connection where it connects to other parts of the machine so the power passing through the lock cannot reach its intended destination.
