No matter what the ceiling height the minimum distance from the top of the window casing to the curtain rod is two inches.
Where to place curtain rods above window.
If you re not using a double rod you can skip this step.
Wall mounted rods are usually installed four inches above the window.
For cathedral ceilings leave approximately four to six inches above the window trim as a guideline.
Go for a curtain rod that is between 8 and 12 inches wider than your window as it will give the illusion that your window is larger than it is.
This will allow whatever curtains you chose to cover the window at all times.
To create the illusion of height mount the drapery rods close to the ceiling.
Watch the rod width.
The one above was made using a couple pieces of cardboard and saved time otherwise spent measuring from the corner of the windows.
Step 3 next measure the window height.
Insert the back curtain rod if you re using a double rod setup.
Then you can hang your sheer curtain or blackout curtain.
Your curtains may hang from the pole using a sleeve rings or eyelets.
You may need to adjust the height of the pole for different curtain hanging styles.
Use a level too especially if you live in an old house with less than perfect walls.
Put the main curtain rod in place.
A simple template ensures you hang the curtain rod at the same height for every window and that your rods won t be crooked.
Attach curtain rings if they are part of your setup.
When selecting the right curtain rod go for one that is a bit wider than the width of your window.
For example on a 54 inch wide window you could extend your curtain rods up to 9 inches on each side 54 divided by three equals 18 so your rod can be up to 72 inches long.
Hang the curtains and double check to make sure your brackets are still secure.
